Someone is watching you! I know this may sound a little bit creepy, but it is true. I remember in the 1980s there was a song called “Somebody is watching you” by Maxwell. The lyrics were all about how he felt someone was watching him all the time. Well, Maxwell was not so far off with this song because people are watching you and everything you do. Your brand is always on display. Everyone is paying attention, so be aware of what you are putting out there.
This is what I call “Brand Presence,” and it is not a new concept. However, it is a very important concept and movement. Remember: everything you do is a direct correlation to your brand and your business. Most people are unaware of what their brand represents or what it stands for, but you have to be aware of how you are showing up in the world. You are always on stage and you have to be transparent.
What does it mean to be transparent? In my opinion, transparency is a word that is tossed around like a tossed salad. But very few people really understand what it means. Most people will tell you it means being real, being open with your community, and proving you have nothing to hide from the public.
Okay, I can relate to those definitions; however, you have to realize you are transparent whether you like it or not. The true concept of transparency is something you cannot hide from. Here is the shocking truth: you do not implement transparency. You are always being transparent because you are always being watched.
• Everything you do is branding.
• Everything you wear is an indication of your brand.
• Every person you associate with or spend time with is branding.
• Every conversation you have is a way of branding.
• Everything you say is branding.
Remember you are constantly being evaluated and judged. Your personal brand is about your uniqueness and encompasses everything about you. You are always on display. Please understand it is your responsibility to define and monitor what you want the world to see.
