Don’t Look Back

In the last two days I received four messages of the same type that came to me from different avenues. Even though sometimes I can be kind of dense when the universe is trying to get a message to me, four times in two days got my attention! The universe was working really hard to provide enough synchronicities so that I would “get it.”

I decided to write about it since I believe that this is a message that most of us can benefit from. Let me tell you about the synchronicities and how they happened and then you be the judge whether or not this is something that may be valuable in your life as well.

The first message came when I was listening to a tape from a group of teachers who call themselves Abraham. The teachers said we are like Magellans, the GPS systems that help people navigate their cars as they are driving. They said, “The Magellan knows where you are and knows where you want to go, and that’s all it needs to know. The Magellan only cares about where you are now and where you want to go!”

The next day in a study group I attended, there was discussion of Lot’s wife. We all know what happened to Lot’s wife as she looked back on the life she was leaving: she turned into a pillar of salt.

Then a friend sent me a book by Barbara DeAngelis called How Did I Get Here? This wonderful little book is about how to recognize and understand the significant transitions, turning points, and crossroads on your path as you move forward. Again this book was about going forward and not looking back.

The last thing was so unexpected, I laughed right out loud when I opened my mail. It was a prayer by minister Dwight Goldwinde. Another friend thought I would enjoy this prayer after a conversation we had. The prayer says in part: “The life you remember was somebody else’s. It wasn’t yours. The life you thought was yours is over. It’s past and gone. In a strange and mysterious way, that life that someone else lived has prepared you for this day, the day when your life actually begins. I agree that the current circumstances of your life are exactly the same as that other person’s life he or she just finished living. Now is the beginning of your life. …The world is your playground for celebration and accomplishment. Welcome to your playground! Welcome to the fear and excitement! Breathe into the fear to feel and create the excitement. Wake up. It’s time to Wake up. Now!”

These four channels were sending me the message loud and clear to close the door on the past and be in the present moment where everything happens and look towards the future.

I especially liked the reference to the Magellan. The Magellan only cares about where you are now and where you want to go. This is enough for us to do: to think about where we are now and reflect and imagine about where we want to end up and what are the kinds of things we want to see in our lives in the future. Everything starts with thoughts. The building you are sitting in started out as a thought in someone’s mind. The clothes you are wearing started out as a thought in someone’s mind. Even our lovely Tidewater Women magazine started out as a thought in someone’s mind. It seems logical that we should give energy and time toward having thoughts that will help us get where we want to go. Since everything starts with a thought, we can begin now to create what we want to see in our future. Perhaps even if we have to move forward in baby steps, we still see where we are now and where we want to end up.

I think also it’s very useful to fill our lives with people who will help us live as we wish, who will provide us with companionship, friendship, support, and camaraderie that will make life worth living.

Take a look at how it feels when you say to yourself, “It only matters where I am now and where I want to go.” Doesn’t it feel as if the weight of the world lifted off your shoulders? Even if you had a wonderful past, that identity of that person is no more. For example, perhaps you were the baby of the family and folks expect you to remain the baby. There are many seemingly harmless roles that people might attach to us—just because it makes life easier and feels safer for some folks to be able to put people in categories. However, those roles, identities, and categories that others may have linked you to in the past are just that. They are in the past and as such are not relevant to the life you are living now.

How refreshing that is. How freeing. How just plain wonderful!
