New, Now, Next: Ready to Move to the Next Level

I love new beginnings. A new year, a new month, a new week, even a new day. Now, with just a few days into 2013, like most people, I’m taking an assessment of last year.

Let’s see: started exercising, check; lost weight, check; had all of my necessary medical tests done, check. But, in some ways these are the easy parts.

What about my goals, dreams and plans? Did I accomplish any of those? Did I have enough determination, courage and discipline to push past all the doubt, fear and naysayers to move closer to where I want to be? Or, did I make excuses?

I’m sure we all know people who are full of big ideas. And, they assure everyone, month after month and year after year that, “I’m really going to do it this time.” But, sure enough, it never happens.

It’s easy to fall into the habit of mediocrity—not living up to our personal standards and abilities—or making excuses for why, this time, it still didn’t happen.

But, changes—even small ones—can make a big impact in our lives. Don’t try to work on everything at once: the diet, the job, the relationship. When we try to do too many things at one time, it can be overwhelming.

Commit to change one step at a time. Decide on the one or two areas of your life you want to begin to work on. Write down your strategy of how you’re going to make changes. Write down the day you will start on the calendar. Then stick with it. Your plan only works if you work it.

In this New Year, 2nd acters, let’s have enough determination, courage, and discipline to make our goals, dreams and plans really happen. After all, it’s a new beginning. Go for it!
