Connect with Art

Find out why taking an art break is good for your soul.

One of my new favorite expressions is “It’s fluid.” I like the image of water the saying conveys, the feeling of movement, of going from here to there. You could say pretty much everything is fluid, right? There’s very little in our lives that stands still—unless it’s us.

And we never really stand still. It may feel that way sometimes, like we’re repeating the same cycle over and over again. In my case, deadline seems to come with lightning speed every month. I find myself once again sitting at the computer pounding the keys as I watch the clock hands spin around and around and another month come to an abrupt end.

Sometimes I feel like a breathless mouse running around on a wheel, but in fact, I am creating and producing anew each month. We all are. Every day is new and everything thing we do is new. It’s just like the expression, “Today is the first day of the rest of your life.” Second chances are always an option.

Speaking of the tick tock of the clock, this month’s deadline is down to the wire. For whatever reason—the waning of the moon, perhaps?—this issue has been a difficult one to finish. Writing this column is one of my last tasks before I do the final proofing and send the pdf to the printer. I’m always exhausted at this stage of the game, and it’s absolutely the wrong time to look for typos and comma errors. Yet this is my life and I do the best I can.

I’m excited about our cover story and our fall arts and culture issue in general. I think art adds so much to life, but we have to take the time to look and to interact with art. The ladies who make glass have found their passion for art crystallizing in this fluid medium, one that shares similar qualities to water. When I was in Sweden last year, I tried glass blowing and I’m super proud of the imperfect blue vase I made. Me an artist? Who knew?

The truth is we are all artists, and playing with art—no matter what form—sets our hearts free for a while. It’s a time to really experience all of our senses and get lost in the creativity of the moment.

When was the last time you made some art? I’m overdue and can’t wait to pick up a paintbrush again soon. Here’s a little exercise to get your creative juices flowing, something I came across while visiting the Institute of Contemporary Art in Richmond (see story on p. 18). Think about a work of fiction that you would enjoy seeing translated into architecture and then sketch a design of it: either the interior or the exterior. (Thanks, Deb Sokolow, for this inspiring idea!)

If you haven’t made any art in a while, take an art break soon. While you’re at it, visit some of our fine local museums and art galleries and view some art. Challenge your sensibilities and discover ways to connect with art. Besides the visual arts, there’s music, dance, drama, and the written word. Have fun with art. Go wild with art. It’s good for your soul.
