Peggy shares her appreciation for long-time friend and colleague, Ronni Kochey, who’s retiring this month.
When I started out in college, I planned to be an actress. I have no clue what I was thinking, but after a few theatre classes at Radford, I realized my heart wasn’t in it. So I switched my major to English and became a teacher. I loved teaching, but once my kids came along, I wanted to spend more time with them, so that’s how I ended up in publishing.
As some of you may remember, Peter and I launched Tidewater Parent magazine in 1990. Seems like ages ago, doesn’t it? One day a woman called and said she wanted to work for us doing advertising sales, but she didn’t have a lot of experience. No problem, we said, and welcomed Ronni Kochey into our mom-and-pop publishing business.
Turns out Ronni was great at selling ads, as well as forging strong relationships with clients. We were so lucky she found us and helped us grow Tidewater Parent into a successful parenting magazine.
Fast forward 25 years. Peter and I sold Tidewater Parent, lived the ex-pat life for a while, and then came back and started Tidewater Women 20 years ago exactly. Soon after, Ronni returned to work for us, and using her sharp sales skills and natural charm, she again helped us grow TW into an important resource for area women.
Tidewater Family came on the scene in 2013, and Ronni, along with our other intrepid account execs—Lynne-Hope Ornoff and Lynn Schwerer —have been a crackerjack sales team without whom TW & TF wouldn’t exist.
But the time has come for dear Ronni to retire. I don’t know how I’ll manage without her. Of course, we had our spats here and there, but over the years, she’s been a rock and a close friend and so committed to ensuring our magazines succeed in helping local women and parents. Of course, Ronni and I will always remain friends, and if I ever need advice or a kick in the pants, I know where to find it.
Thanks, Ronni, for your hard work, generous spirit, and warm friendship. Thanks also to Lynne-Hope and Lynn and our new sales rep, Alex, for your dedication and commitment.
Running a publication these days has its challenges, but we continue to believe that our community of women needs to feel connected to each other, and sitting down with Tidewater Women every month helps us stay in touch.
Thanks to our readers and advertisers for supporting us. Have a fabulous month and keep up the good work!
