Community Theatre Needs You

  • By:  Melissa Maniglia

Check out your local community theatre. A whole new world awaits you!

Every year hundreds of your fellow Hampton Roads citizens passionately work to put together community theatre productions in the area. Whether it be the Little Theatres of Virginia Beach and Norfolk, Generic Theatre, or any number of the other magnificent local theatre companies, professional quality productions are in the works every day in Hampton Roads. But, why are your fellow community members getting involved? And why should you?

Community theatre helps everyone, yes, everyone, find their creative side.

Community theatre is a welcoming group of fellow artists, semi artists, and people who simply love the arts, who come together and let their quirkiest, or most traditional, skills shine. Sure, the theatre is full of fabulous singers, dancers, actors, and musicians, but they aren’t the only people community theatre is home to. Whether it is building a set (have you ever swung a hammer?), sewing a costume, marketing the show, or designing a safe and captivating fight scene, community theatre has a need for almost any and every skill you have.

Be part of a theatre family and meet new people.

Putting on a community theatre production often brings together members of our society whose paths have yet to cross, working together to tell an exciting, thought-provoking, or simply fun story to their friends and neighbors. In doing so, friendships, working relationships, and lifelong bonds are formed while painting a set or rehearsing a musical. To any newcomer to a city or just someone looking for new experiences, being a part of community theatre turns a city where you happen to live into a true home.

Learn new skills and have fun while doing so.

Are you a “girly girl” who was always curious about being a “techie?” Or are you a bookworm looking to find your own creative inspiration? How about an avid sportsman looking for a fun indoor activity? Well, look no further than community theatre! This is the place where, if you are interested in helping, we will teach you! Like a traditional apprenticeship, community theatre helps build your new skills from the ground up. This year, you might be learning how to operate a spotlight, and next year, you are the lighting designer. To those who are willing to learn and work hard: Welcome!

Expand your horizons and open yourself up to an entirely new world.

Like a good book, a play can take you on a journey through time and history or offer a perspective that modern lives—and not having a time machine—make it impossible for you to experience any other way. Les Misérables might be a book you were forced to read in high school, but the story comes alive when you see it on stage. Likewise, it’s impossible to travel back in time to Italy in the 1500s, but warring factions and a tragic romance are brought to life in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Community theatre brings alive stories from around the world and allows you to experience them from an entirely new perspective—the comfort of your theatre seat!

Enjoy professional quality productions in your neighborhood.

Not to brag, but Hampton Roads is packed with highly talented people of Broadway-caliber talents. In fact, there are several performers and theatre technicians in the area who have Broadway and other professional theatre credits. You don’t need to travel to New York to see some of the most gifted artists in America performing; you just need to go to your local community theatre!

So, have I convinced you? If so, check out your local community theatre today. A whole new world awaits you!
