Peaceful Nature: Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort

One of my favorite desert destinations is Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort & Spa south of Phoenix in Chandler, AZ. Owned by the Gila River Indian Community, the family resort offers an amazing variety of activities and amenities—horseback riding, golf, tennis, Wild West activities, and more—and is also ideal for meetings, conventions, weddings, and events. Every time I visit the Phoenix area, I try to steal away for a day or two at Sheraton Wild Horse Pass to enjoy its relaxing vibe.

What’s unique about the resort is every detail in the architecture, art, and décor reflects the heritage and culture of the Gila River Indians, a community comprised of two tribes: the Pima and the Maricopa, who have coexisted on this land for generations. Their peaceful nature permeates the resort. It’s the perfect place to get away from it all. On this visit, I bee line for the resort’s award-winning spa, Aji, which means sanctuary. I’m treating myself to one last indulgence before heading back East.

First, I meet a friend for lunch in the Aji Spa Café, where I enjoy chicken tacos dressed in a chipotle sour cream—yum. Then it’s time to relax by the gorgeous spa pools with a magnificent view of the mountain ranges on the edge of the desert.

Soon I am called for my Hot Stone Massage, a soothing journey that takes me into the deepest corners of my mind and not only heals physically, but also spiritually and emotionally. At the end, my therapist invites me to choose a small rock with a personal message meant for me. I turn over my rock and discover my word is “Joy.” I smile, feeling a deep sense of appreciation for the gift of being in such an inspiring place.

Aji Spa will be closed for renovation from July 6-Aug. 7, 2015.
