Kitchenware or China?

I want to be kitchenware, I told her. What? She said. What do you mean by that? Kitchenware is what I call the everyday plates, knives, forks, and glasses. It’s the stuff that we use and are not afraid of breaking.

We can put it in the microwave and the dishwasher. We let the kids and their friends use it. We don’t have to handle it with care because it’s what we’re comfortable with. It’s just a part of our lives that we have grown used to. It serves us well.

That’s what I want to be. I want my life to be useful, touchable, and approachable. – to live life with purpose. I don’t want to be seen as the “good china.” The good china is only taken out of the cabinet on special occasions. We handle it carefully, so not to chip or break it. We admonish others to be careful.

It’s like the beautiful vase behind the glass in the museum. Look, but don’t touch. Admire it, finger the glass, and wish you could have it. But you can’t, so how can it be of any real value for you, other than to just look at.

For many years, I was that vase, the good china. Look at me from a far, admire me, but don’t come too close or you’d see my cracks and flaws. I wanted just to project an image of perfection and have people want to be near me and even be me, but not get too close. I didn’t get close enough to others to really touch lives.

But, as I’ve got older, especially as a woman in my 2nd Act, I realized that if I didn’t get close enough to people for them to see my imperfections, I couldn’t effect change in them. I couldn’t help them with their lives.

2nd Acters, let’s not be afraid to get close to others. To open up our hearts and lives. This is the only way we can build a community of support for each other. It’s how we can inspire, encourage, and motivate women in one of the most exciting times of their lives.
