A Little Boost

Dear Readers,

I got my 15 minutes of fame last month when I was chosen by Inside Business to receive the Women in Business Achievement Award. It’s all thanks to my friend, Marcy Germanotta of the Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast, who nominated me. If it weren’t for people like Marcy, who shine the light on others, I would still be sitting on the sidelines. She’s been encouraging me to reach new heights ever since I met her.

Do you know people like Marcy? They make it their mission to encourage others along their path. It’s part of who they are. They’re givers, but what they give isn’t tangible. Instead they send out positive energy, and if you tune it to their vibes, you’ll catch it. Positive energy is contagious, and by sharing it, you can make the world a better place.

How’s your energy these days? Do you feel as if you barely have enough to get through the day? Or worse are you focusing on the things in life that aren’t going well? That’s a one-way ticket to depression. There’s no question that our energy can affect our well being. If we feel like a slug, guess what? We will probably act like a slug. On the other hand, if we feel like Roadrunner, then—beep, beep—anything’s possible.

I think most of the time we can choose our mood and mindset. There’s a little switch in our brains that we can flick one way or the other. Do we choose to be happy and vibrant and caring and giving? Or—flick—do we opt to feel sorry for ourselves, have a 10-hour pity party, drown our sorrows in ice cream or wine (or both), and generally give up on ourselves?

OK, I admit I’m not always in a good mood—just ask my husband. I have my moments when I think the world is out to get me. But with a little effort—and it does take conscious effort—I can lift myself out of the dumps and focus on the brighter side of life. Because there’s always a brighter side. You just have to look.

Of course, there are professionals who can help you feel better about yourself—and maybe some people need meds to lift themselves out of deep depression. But here are a few other ways to bring positive energy into your life. Exercise. Eat healthy. Start a hobby. Join a church. Volunteer. Hang around with positive people.

As the new year dawns, you don’t have to make a bunch of impossible resolutions. Just choose to make yourself happy by doing activities that lift you up. Even better, find ways to lift other people up. Be like Marcy and encourage people who can use a little boost. Spread your positive energy this year. If we make a conscious effort, we can change ourselves—and the world—for the better.

Peace and love,

Peggy
