OK, I’ll admit it. I love chocolate. If calories were no concern, I’d figure out a way to include chocolate in every meal. But since I’m trying not to turn into a two-ton Tubby, I have to limit my chocolate consumption. Most days I have one square of dark chocolate, usually after dinner, but sometimes I need a pick-me-up after lunch. Mmm, one small piece is all it takes. It’s just the right amount.
I have a good excuse for having chocolate on the brain. Our cover story this month is about local women who are pursuing their passion for chocolate. You can read more about them on page six. I expect you’ll be hankering for some chocolate yourself after a paragraph or two.
The theme of this issue of TW is healthy bodies. Besides our cover story about chocolate (it’s healthy, right?), you’ll find articles about the benefits of eating raw, how sound therapy can enhance our health, and why our relationship with food has everything to do with weight issues. You’ll also meet two teen-aged girls who are on a mission to inspire other teens to learn to cook. Finally, our In Season column this month celebrates our local seafood bounty. Hungry yet?
Food is a part of our everyday lives. But how close are you to the food you eat? So many of us favor convenience over freshness. Usually this means eating food that’s not very high on the healthy scale. We’re also used to instant gratification. We’re hungry, we drive by a fast-food joint, and we know that within a couple minutes we can be chewing on a warm, gooey burger. The trouble is the warm, gooey burger has a LOT of empty calories. And don’t even talk about the French fries.
Here’s an idea. Make sure you always have protein bars or some trail mix in your car. Grab a banana or apple before you leave the house and have it handy in case hunger strikes before you can get home and make some healthy food. Or try practicing self-deprivation! What a thought. Prove to yourself that you’re stronger than your cravings. Drink a glass of water and feel proud.
When it comes to preparing a meal, make it a family affair. Peter and I have always asked our sons to fix the lettuce for our salad—tear it up, rinse it, and dry it in the salad spinner. Sometimes they’ll help with chopping veggies, too. It’s so gratifying to see them pile up the salad on their plates.
We’ve always made sitting together at the dinner table an important part of the day. Of course, as our sons have gotten older, work schedules interfere, and Peter and I find ourselves dining alone more often than not. The boys are happy I still cook family-sized meals, however, since they love to raid the refrigerator for leftovers when they get home. I wonder if I’ll ever be able to cook for two.
