Finding Balance

Take a break from smartphones, email, and social media this month and plan some "me" time!

My head is swimming. I just got off the phone with my web guy. He has all these great ideas for my website, but it’s like I have to clone myself to do all the tasks involved in making my site perfect. It seems the more technology rears its ugly head, the more I wish it would go away.

It’s true, right? Think how much more time we would have without smartphones, email, and social media. Like the tempting Sirens who sang bewitching songs to Odysseus, technology has a way of distracting us from getting our work done or even being present in the moment.

OK, I’ll admit I’m guilty. I love to post my grandson’s photos on Facebook, and I feel a warm glow when people respond. But honestly, rather than staring at images on my screen, I should switch off my computer and go play with Lincoln. Sadly, it seems that virtual experiences are becoming more meaningful than real ones.

What’s a person to do? We need the convenience of technology, but it’s become a burden as well.

People are so much more stressed these days. There just isn’t enough time anymore, it seems. Where did it all go? Time seems to have sped up lately. When was the last time you felt like you had too much time on your hands? I can’t even remember. There never seems to be enough hours in the day to do all that needs doing. Sometimes it makes you want to crawl under a bush and hide.

The experts say we need to find balance in our lives. Of course! Balance. The hard part is figuring out how to prioritize things when everything needs to be done right now! Maybe it’s time to start making lists again. What I like about lists is, when you write everything down that you need to do, it doesn’t seem so scary anymore. Plus isn’t crossing things off a list the most wonderful feeling?

And there among all the have-to’s on my list I plan to include some want-to’s. Like getting together with my gal pals, going for a hike in the woods, and spending more time with Lincoln. My web guy and all those infernal tasks I have to do can wait.

Here’s how you can fit in some “me” time this month. Make a list of all the things you want to do but never seem to have time for. Then schedule them into your routine. And leave a little free time—time for a walk on the beach, time to listen to the birds singing, time to feel the warm autumn sun on your skin.

With a little effort, you can fit in an hour here and there for enjoying life’s simpler pleasures. And guess what happens when you do? Like magic, your stress will start to fade away and you’ll remember what really matters in life. (Here’s a hint: the things that matter don’t have screens.) Happy October!
